This historic, seaside town situated on the west side of the Island of Hawai`i is a popular visitor destination and over the years has grown in popularity with individuals and families looking for a friendly, sunny home in Hawai`i. With approximately 23,000 residents, Kailua-Kona is the Island’s second largest population center. Tropical weather and accessibility to the warm Pacific Ocean offers an outdoor lifestyle which includes snorkeling, swimming, stand up paddle boarding, and outrigger canoe paddling. As the home of the Ironman World Triathlon competition, bike and jogging lanes are busy year-round and special swimming lanes are set up off Kailua Pier to accommodate swimmers.

Kailua Pier is a hub for visitor activity, with snorkel sailing and parasail vessels departing from the pier daily. As well, cruise ships can often be seen anchored in Kailua Bay and tendering ferrying passengers from the ship to the pier. The pier is also where deep sea fishing boats will bring their catch to be weighed during the annual International Billfish Tournament. Just a few miles north is Honokohau Harbor where fishing, dive and other pleasure boats are moored.

Adjacent to Kailua Pier are several historic sites, including Ahu`ena Heiau, once the homesite for Hawai`i’s monarch Kamehameha the First; Mokuaikau`a Church, Hawai`i’s first Christian Church; and Hulihee Palace, a summer home for Hawai`i’s ali`i, and now a museum. Beach parks dot the shoreline and small shopping centers located from Kailua-Kona to Keauhou offer the amenities of life. The Ellison S. Onizuka Kona International Airport is located about 10 minutes north of Kailua-Kona.

Tourism is an economic driver for the community, as well as cultivation of the famed Kona coffee. Coffee farms are located on the hillsides above Kailua-Kona, stretching down to the South Kona towns of Kealakekua and Captain Cook. Farming, fishing, and ranching provide fresh fish, meats, and vegetables via the weekly farmer markets.

Housing is divided between the resort residential homes and condominiums along Ali`i Drive, Kona’s oceanfront roadway, and the slopes of Hualālai mountain. The climate may dictate your desired location; the shoreline – where air conditioning would be welcome in the warmest months of the year – to the upper slopes of Hualālai – where a fireplace would feel good during the winter.
