Built in the 1800s, the trail was used to drive cattle along and was an upgrade to the rockier shoreline trail, known as the Ala Kahakai. Along the King’s Trail – also known as the Ala Loa – is a field of petroglyphs. These figures were carved into the lava by early Hawaiians and this field is one of the best-preserved examples of ki`i pohaku found in the state.

Waikōloa Village Just upslope of the Kohala Coast is the community of Waikōloa Village. Developed in the 1970s as a bedroom community for workers at the resorts, it has grown to include parks, a community center, a shopping center, and post office, with a second shopping center under development, to serve the community’s 7,400 residents. An 18-hole golf course is also located in the Village, as well as churches, restaurants, medical facilities, and a school serving children in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. The community offers stunning views of the mountains, the Kohala Coast and across the Alenuihaha Channel to Maui. It is just 15 minutes away from the beautiful white sand beaches and resorts of the Kohala Coast. Its community association manages the Village’s golf course, aquatic center, tennis & pickleball courts and Waikōloa Stables, an equestrian center. Several condominium complexes as well as single family homes and homesites are situated in Waikōloa Village.
