July is a busy month for community events with the canoe regatta season well underway, Fourth of July celebrations and the O-bon dances at various temples around West Hawai`i.
Here are some of the July 4th celebrations you can participate in:
* Turtle Independence Day at the Auberge Resort at Mauna Lani. Now in its 36th year, this annual event celebrates the honu – Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle – as a group of these beloved sea creatures are released into the open ocean. * Also being held on the Kohala Coast, Waikoloa Beach Resort is offering a lineup of July 4 events including the annual Rubber Duckie Race. Starting at 11 a.m. and continuing throughout the day – with the duckie race at 3 p.m. – families will find activities and entertainment for all ages. * 61st Annual July 4 Parker Ranch Rodeo and Horse Races is being held at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. with the rodeo events from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at https://aubergeresorts.com/maunalani/experiences/turtle-independence-day/.
* If you are a fireworks fan, Kailua-Kona will be the site of a 4th of July Parade at 6 p.m. followed by fireworks over Kailua Bay.
* "Under The New Moon" Talk Story is a special event being hosted by OUTRIGGER Kona Resort and Spa in Kona which brings together guests, locals, and ʻohana for an evening of Hawaiian culture. Enjoy storytelling with Kumu Keala Ching, stories honoring Nā Pua Hawaiʻi. Hawai`i’s flowers are extensions of different native and non-native flowers, people and knowledge of the Hawaiian people. This event is being held the last Tuesday of every month, 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the resort’s Kaʻukulaelae Bayview Lawn. Bring your chairs and mats (no coolers, please).
