*The Hawaiian culture and the sport of outrigger canoe racing are the hallmarks of the 20th IVF Vaa World Sprint Championship being hosted by the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association and held in Hilo August 13 to August 24. This event showcases the best of the best paddlers and creates an opportunity to inspire new generations of paddlers. This is an opportunity for visitors and residents alike to learn and experience the Hawaiian culture through workshops and demonstrations showcasing traditional Hawaiian arts and crafts. The event is being held August 17, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and August 18, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Workshops and demonstrations such as ulana lauhala (lauhala weaving), holo waʻa (canoe rides), kuiki (quilting), Hawaiian games, lei haku ame lei wili (different lei making styles), ulana niu (coconut frond weaving), kapa making, ʻohe hano ihu (bamboo nose flute), and live Hawaiian music. The weather in Kawaihae is typically dry and humid, so it is recommended that attendees use sunscreen, wear comfortable clothing, and bring their own water, refreshments, and lunch if planning on staying all day.
