-Mark Saturday, February 1, on your calendar so you don’t miss the annual Waimea Cherry Blossom Festival. From 9am-3pm you can enjoy a full lineup of hands-on Japanese and multi-cultural activities and performances. There will be bonsai activities, hands-on mochi pounding, sake tasting, bon dancing, traditional tea ceremonies, food demonstrations by local chefs, broke da' mouth food prepared by local organization, and loads of craft vendors. Performances can be enjoyed by festival goers at multiple venues. Roberts Hawaii will provide a free transportation shuttle between Church Row Park and Parker Ranch Center, though walking is encouraged. The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival is produced by the Hawai'i County Parks and Recreation's Culture and Education Section. -Celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Snake at Queens Marketplace in Waikoloa Beach Resort. This free event includes live entertainment, keiki activities, and lots more family fun from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 8. Firecrackers and colorful Chinese Lion Dances from the Yao Gong Lion Dance Team will kick off the Year of the Snake. The dancers will perform acrobatic feats and leaps throughout Queens’ Marketplace, interacting with the audience as they go door to door. Guests will have the chance to feed the lion lucky red Lai See envelopes and bring good luck. Lai See envelopes will be available at the Queens’ Marketplace info booth.
-Just a word of caution to everyone who loves the ocean, as I do. There have been multiple days of high waves along the west and south shorelines. Please be informed about the surf heights and exercise extra caution and care if you are venturing into or onto the ocean for water activities. Sometimes it’s better to enjoy the sunshine on the shoreline and leave surfing, snorkeling, and paddling for another day.
