*  It’s Merrie Monarch week on the Big Island! This hula festival is one the largest events of the year in the state of Hawai`i and a true celebration of the Hawaiian culture and hula. You can enjoy three days of hula – Miss Aloha Hula Competition on Thursday, April 13; Kahiko competition on Friday, April 14; `Auana competition on April 15. A Hawaiian Arts Fair is being held at the Ahfook Chinen Auditorium Wednesday through Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. daily, and a parade will wend its way through downtown Hilo on Saturday, April 15, starting at 10:30 a.m. Tickets to the evening performances sell out quickly, but don’t fret as you can watch it live every evening on Hawai`i’s local television station – KFVE (K5). * Tūtū Pele has put her eruption in Halema`uma`u crater on “pause.” So, while you may see a “glow” at the bottom of the crater, there is no active eruption happening and, as a result, very little “vog” in the Kona air. This is a plus for Kona residents, who can enjoy a clear outlook over the ocean and up the mountainside of Hualālai. 

*  The Spring weather has been quite pleasant, with clear, sunny mornings and some afternoon and evening showers. If you decide to take a drive to Waimea from Kona along the upper Mamalahoa Highway youʻll see the jacaranda starting to bloom in the Pu`uwa`awa`a area. Beautiful!

*  Are you a chocaholic? Kona is home to cacao growers and processors and its very own chocolate festival.
