* Summer is right around the corner and you will likely see more late morning cloud cover and afternoon rainfall – key to providing the Kona Coffee crop with the right environment to encourage a good harvest. Kona is the only region in the Hawaiian islands where summer rainfall exceeds winter rainfall! Mornings are the best time of the day to get your fill of Vitamin D. By noon, the slopes of Hualālai are clouding over and showers are making their way down toward the shore. The temperature gauge starts to creep up in May and while evenings are still temperate, the daytime highs will be in the mid 80ʻs, so have your shorts and sleeveless tops at the ready.

 * Calling all cowboys and fans of the paniolo culture, you wonʻt want to miss the Honoka`a Western Week May 19 to 29! Back in full force after a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic, this year’s Western Week is featuring a round up of friendly competitions, `ono food, music, dancing, storytelling, keiki games and a Western Week parade. If you go to just one day of the event, you might want to consider Saturday, May 20, for the parade and block party. If youʻre a Portuguese Bean Soup fan, you wonʻt want to miss the competition for the best recipe on Tuesday, May 23.  * The Bon-yu Kai Bonsai Club of Waimea will put on the Annual Waimea Bon-yu Kai Bonsai Exhibition Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The club focuses on teaching and perpetuating the art and tradition of bonsai and this exhibition will feature beautiful plants and a large variety of trees. Youʻre invited to come and talk story with club members and view the bonsai. The event, held at the Waimea Community Center,  is free and open to the public.
