- It has gotten very warm in Kona; we are feeling the summer heat with strong sunlight during the day. However, temperatures seldom go over 82 F and evening showers and island breezes help to keep us cool.
- The summer canoe regatta season is winding down and will be capped with the Queen Lili'uokalani Canoe Races in Kailua Bay on Labor Day weekend, Thursday, August 29, 2024, through Monday, September 2, 2024. The regatta celebrates the birthday of Queen Lili`uokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch. Paddlers of all ages, from around the globe, gather in Kona to challenge themselves and each other in a series of races, including an 18-mile-long distance race from Kailua Bay to Honaunau. Thursday there will be OC4 canoe sprints for teams of eight in a variety of age and gender classes. On Saturday will be the Wa'a Kaukahi long distance races for men and women. - Orchid lovers won’t want to miss the Kona Orchid Society’s Fall Show and Sale on Saturday, September 21, 9a.m. to 2p.m. at the Makaeo County Pavilion, Old Airport Beach Park. The nominal admission fee includes many educational offerings, a display of blooming orchids by club members and a sale presenting a wide selection of healthy plants from Hawaii Island growers. In addition to numerous orchid varieties, choose from cactus, succulents, air plants, bonsai, protea, fruit trees, exotic tropicals, water plants, herbs, vegetable starts, and bedding plants. Jams, jellies, arts and crafts and high-fire functional stoneware will also be sold. Food vendors will be on site offering tasty local favorites and free boxes will be available while supplies last to carry purchases. Attendees are invited to talk story with growers and on-site master gardeners for tried-and-true growing tips.
- Many of you are aware of the issue condominium HOAs face regarding insurance. It was a relief to hear that Governor Josh Green, M.D., has signed an emergency proclamation aimed at stabilizing Hawaii’s volatile condominium insurance market, which has seen unprecedented rate increases. Governor Green has established a Joint Executive and Legislative Task Force to monitor the insurance market, implement short-term fixes and recommend emergency changes or legislative proposals. Among the fixes are providing additional options for condominium associations to purchase hurricane and property insurance for their buildings. We look forward to hearing more from the task force as they explore, monitor and offer solutions to HOAs around the state.
