* On Aug. 8, three wildfires broke out in the South and North Kohala districts on Big Island. Very strong winds fanned the flames, which threatened residents and their homes above and below a section of Akoni Pule Highway. Homes in Kohala Ranch, Kohala Estates and Kohala by the Sea were evacuated. More than 1,000 acres of grassland burned. In a separate fire, residents in the North and South Fairway homes of Mauna Kea Resort below Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway were evacuated. The resort lost a maintenance building and equipment to the flames, which consumed more than 200 acres. A third fire ignited and burned around 20 acres in Lalamilo. Thanks to the tireless and dedicated work of County of Hawaii firefighters, assisted by the National Guard, volunteer fire crews and a fire crew from the U.S. Army’s Pōhakuloa Training Area, fires were contained and structural damage was minimal.
* Our hearts go out to the Island of Maui where wildfires also broke out on August 8 in a variety of locations – Upcountry Kula, Pulehu/Kihei and Lahaina. The fires, fueled by dry grasses and brush, were whipped by extremely high winds and on August 9 the flames swept across Maui, burning homes in Upcountry Kula and devastating the town of Lahaina, leaving it in ashes. More than 110 people lost their lives in the Lahaina fire, more than 1,000 are unaccounted for, and hundreds of people across Maui are homeless. Relief efforts started immediately with County, State and Federal resources, as well as a multitude of organizations and individuals, rallying to gather and transport needed supplies and goods to the residents of Maui, organize housing and provide financial relief. Support is coming from around the world. The state is tapping into VRBOs on Maui and beyond to help in providing temporary homes for those who are in shelters. The governor and Hawaii Tourism Authority have asked that travelers to Hawaii avoid West Maui (Ka`anapali, Lahaina, Napili and Kapalua). All other areas of Maui, as well as all of the other islands, are welcoming visitors.
* The summer weather continues to be very warm and dry, with tropical storms and hurricanes firing up in the Pacific and making their way towards to islands. As well, a red flag warning for leeward areas (West Side) of the Big Island remains in effect as critical fire weather conditions of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures makes for extreme fire danger. * It doesnʻt seem possible that Labor Day is right around the corner and with it the 50th Queen Lili`uokalani Long Distance Canoe Race in Kona August 31 to September 4. Paddlers from around the world will be here for four days of races, a torchlight parade and awards luau. The Queenʻs Race, a signature 18-mile long-distance race, is set for Saturday, September 2.
